Epsilon III

Epsilon III by David Gian Cursio

Epsilon III is a geologically unstable world in the Epsilon Eridani system, directly beneath the orbital path of Babylon 5.
Beneath its cracked surface lies the Great Machine — an ancient, planetary-scale construct predating known civilizations, capable of manipulating energy, hyperspace, and even time itself.
Though seemingly barren, Epsilon III is one of the most strategically and historically significant locations of the Babylon 5 era, serving as a silent guardian under the stewardship of Draal.

Planetary Overview

  • Name: Epsilon III
  • Star System: Epsilon Eridani System
  • Sector: Sector 14 (Epsilon Sector)
  • Primary Inhabitants: Automated systems; overseen by Draal (Minbari custodian)
  • Surface Conditions: Geologically unstable; frequent seismic activity and energy discharges
  • Environment: Thin atmosphere, mineral-rich crust, vast artificial infrastructure beneath the surface
  • Primary Installation: The Great Machine of Epsilon III

From orbit, Epsilon III appears barren and hostile, but deep below the crust lies a labyrinth of conduits, reactors, and control chambers extending toward the mantle — a machine so large it is effectively part of the planet itself.

Discovery

  • Initial Anomalies (2258):
    • Babylon 5’s sensors detect massive, irregular energy surges from Epsilon III.
    • Attempts to survey the planet reveal dangerous instability and unexplained power readings.
  • Expeditions from Babylon 5:
    • A joint mission led by Commander Jeffrey Sinclair and Ambassador Draal uncovers access points to an ancient underground complex.
    • The crew encounters Varn, the dying caretaker of the Great Machine, who has maintained it in isolation for centuries.
  • Transfer of Custodianship:
    • With Varn near death, Draal volunteers to bond with the Machine.
    • The system accepts him as its new living interface, granting him control and sealing the planet from further casual access.

The Great Machine

The Great Machine is a planetary-scale artificial intelligence and energy-control system of unknown origin. Its known capabilities include:

  • Monitoring hyperspace and jumpgate activity across multiple sectors.
  • Generating immense energy bursts capable of destroying or disabling starships in orbit.
  • Manipulating temporal and dimensional phenomena, including stabilizing rifts and viewing selected moments in the past or possible futures.
  • Accessing vast historical records and projecting immersive holographic reconstructions.

Once bonded, Draal effectively becomes the “voice” and guardian of the Machine, using its power sparingly and only when the balance of the galaxy is at stake. During the Shadow War, Epsilon III’s systems provide crucial intelligence, surveillance, and limited direct intervention in support of Sheridan, Delenn, and their allies.

Geology & Environment

  • Unstable Crust:
    • Continual operation of deep machinery creates fault lines, quakes, and energy discharges.
    • Seismic disturbances are sometimes visible from orbit as surface ruptures and glowing fissures.
  • Artificial Infrastructure:
    • Massive power conduits channel energy from the core to upper levels of the Machine.
    • Scans suggest the planet was either heavily modified or purpose-built to house the complex.
  • Controlled Stability:
    • Artificial gravity fields and managed geothermal vents appear to keep the planet marginally stable.
    • Without continuous regulation, the machinery might tear Epsilon III apart.

Historical Significance

  • 2258 – Revelation of the Machine:
    • Discovery of Varn and the Great Machine by Babylon 5 personnel.
    • Draal assumes custodianship, removes the planet from general access, and warns that its power must not be abused.
  • 2259–2261 – Shadow War Era:
    • The Machine provides long-range surveillance, strategic warnings, and limited temporal insight to Sheridan and Delenn.
    • Its involvement remains largely secret to avoid drawing hostile attention.
  • Post–Shadow War / Interstellar Alliance Era:
    • Epsilon III is treated as a special ally installation, with its existence and capabilities kept classified at the highest levels.
    • Draal maintains contact with Babylon 5 and selected Alliance leaders, offering help only when necessary.

Origin Theories

The creators of the Great Machine are never definitively identified. Unified lore presents several possibilities:

  • A precursor race predating the First Shadow War by tens of thousands of years.
  • A civilization on par with, or at least technologically overlapping, First One–level societies such as the Vorlons or Walkers of Sigma 957.
  • A group dedicated to long-term observation and preservation of galactic history, using Epsilon III as both archive and instrument.

What is certain is that its technology exceeds that of the known younger races and rivals even Vorlon and Shadow constructs in scope and endurance.

Access & Security

  • Restricted Approach:
    • Following Draal’s bond with the Machine, access to Epsilon III is heavily restricted.
    • Automated defense systems can target and destroy unauthorized vessels within a defined exclusion zone around the planet.
  • Diplomatic Channels:
    • Official contact with Draal is conducted via secure channels from Babylon 5 or trusted Alliance representatives.
    • The general population and most governments remain unaware of the full extent of Epsilon III’s capabilities.

Legacy

Epsilon III stands as:

  • A Silent Guardian: A world of staggering power, used with caution and guided by a single trusted caretaker.
  • A Living Archive: A repository of knowledge and historical records, preserving fragments of civilizations long gone.
  • A Mirror of Babylon 5’s Purpose: Positioned directly beneath the station, Epsilon III reflects the same dual mission — to understand the past, prevent future catastrophes, and safeguard the fragile peace of the younger races.
